UCD remain on course to top the First Division and return to the top flight for the first time in five years after beating pre-season favourites Galway United 2-0 in Belfield.

The Students inflicted Alan Murphy's first defeat as Galway boss thanks to second-half goals from Daire O'Connor and Yoyo Mahdy.

There was an early scare for the home side as Josh Collins was penalised for a trip in the box on Eoin McCormack, but the striker saw his penalty excellently-saved by Conor Kearns.

The league leaders took the lead early in the first half as Mahdy's shot was blocked by a Galway defender, and O'Connor was on hand to lash the ball home.

If that goal was a touch scrappy, Mahdy's clincher was anything but as the Students showed sublime technical ability to practically walk the ball into the net.
