Live Updates for Argentina -v- Croatia

90' + 4'

Will anyone look forward to playing Croatia in this sort of form? Mind you, not many teams will be as feeble as Argentina were tonight.

90' + 4'

This is going to be a post-mortum for Argentina. They must rely on beating Nigera in the last game to have any chance of qualifying. That is not guarantee based on tonight's efforts. This defeat cannot do anything for the confidence of the side. A massive job awaits for the coach and the playing staff awaits. The struggles they had in qualifying came back to haunt them and a lot of passengers exist at the moment.

90' + 4'

FULL TIME!

The game has ended between Argentina and Croatia.

90' + 3'

Yellow Card

Vedran Corluka is booked for Croatia.

90' + 2'

Substitution

Vedran Corluka replaces Mario Mandzukic for Croatia.

90' + 1'

Remember Croatia v Germany in 1998? Then a tired German side succumbied to a hungry and talented Croatian side. They break from a corner and Rakitic carries it forward. His shot is parried by Caballero but only to the feet of Kovacic. He lays it back to Rakitic who slots it home.

90' + 1'

GOAL!

Ivan Rakitic scores for Croatia.

90'

88'

Croatia are not settling for their win at the moment. They go forward again and come close to a third.

87'

Yellow Card

Marcos Acuna is booked for Argentina.

87'

It is remarkable how straight forward a night the Croatia defence has had tonight. Certainly since the substitution of Aguero.

85'

Yellow Card

Nicolas Otamendi is booked for Argentina.

85'

He is lucky to stay on there. Rakatic is fouled by Mascherano. Otamedi decides to kick the balls straight at his head. The discipline is gone at the moment and he really should be sent off for that.

85'

Almost a third! A free-kick by Rakitic hits the bar and comes back out. Argentina look dead and buried.

82'

Substitution

Mateo Kovacic replaces Ivan Perisic for Croatia.

82'

Substitution

Marcos Acuna replaces Ivan Perisic for Argentina.

80'

As bad as the first goal was, this is magnificent. And befitting the skill of the little midfielder. He picks up the ball and manges to curl a wonderful effort into the bottom corner. Are Argentina gone now?

80'

GOAL!

Luka Modric scores for Croatia.

68'

Substitution

Paulo Dybala replaces Enzo Perez for Argentina.

67'

Yellow Card

Sime Vrsaljko is booked for Croatia.

66'

Almost a second for the Croats. Rakitic plays it wide to Vrsaljko who slips it into Mandzudic. He tries to flick it home but only finds the side netting.

64'

Just over the bar from the resulting corner. The pressure is stepped up.

63'

Argentina come again. Higuain is released down the line. His cross into the penalty area is decent and finds Meza near the six yard area. He should score. Subasic palms the ball out before Rakitic clears it.

61'

Messi comes to life and almost sets up Higuin. It is just about intercepted though. More like that needed.

59'

Mandzukic comes in late on Meza. A deserved card.

59'

Yellow Card

Mario Mandzukic is booked for Croatia.

56'

Substitution

Cristian Pavon replaces Eduardo Salvio for Argentina.

55'

A shake up is needed and the Juventus striker is brought on. Augero is unfortunated to be hooked off. he is certainly not the worse attacker out there.

55'

Substitution

Gonzalo Higuain replaces Sergio Aguero for Argentina.

53'

What a disaster by Caballero! He attempts to chip a pass out to Mercado but instead finds Rebic. He meets it first time and the scissor kick flies into the top corner.

53'

GOAL!

Ante Rebic scores for Croatia.

51'

Yellow Card

Gabriel Mercado is booked for Argentina.

46'

Second Half

The second half between Argentina and Croatia has started.

45' + 2'

Mandzudic does well down the left. His ball into the area finds Rebic. He is unmarked but manges to blaze well over. The villian so far could well have further driven the nail into the South Americans.

45' + 2'

Half Time

It is half-time between Argentina and Croatia.

44'

More tackles fly in. Meza looks like he stands on Vrsaljko's ankle. He is lucky to not be blown up.

39'

An acculimation of fouls sees the midfielder booked. He can have no complaints. A number of incidents resulted in a telling off but the referee has lost his patience. It could have been a red given a double foot stamp.

39'

Yellow Card

Ante Rebic is booked for Croatia.

36'

Mercado is down after a 50-50 challenge with Rebic. The midfielder is lucky not to receive a caution for that.

32'

And should be another goal! Messi has an effort snuffed clear by the defence. They play it forward. Vrsalijko plays in a wonderful cross towards the six yard area. Mandzudic is waiting but his header is just wide.

29'

Should have been a goal for Argentina! Lovren is beaten for the ball on the left hand side and falls over. Salvio gains possession. The angle is tight so he plays in Perez. Subasic has gone walkabout so he faces an empty net. His effort is wide of the target though

26'

Better from Argentina. Augero breaks down the right and beats Vida on the sideline. His cross is headed over by Strinic. Interesting that Modric tracked Messi all the way during that attack. The corner leads to nothing however.

24'

Argentina still look extremely nervous at the back. Tagliafico and Otamedi do not inspire confidence at all. Croatia still appear the side with the most cohesive patterns

20'

Almost a disaster for Tagliafico! He concedes possesion after a poor kick out. The referee blows for a foul by Mandzudic but it looks extremely soft

12'

Deflected over the bar. Messi plays in Salvio who lays it off to Segrio Augero who's first time effort cannons off a Croatian defender

10'

This system is very clever from Croatia. Their set up is very fluid and set up for the runners in their team. Modric is naturally at the heart of it all. He ties up Rakitic on the edge of the Argentinian area. He plays a diagonal ball to Vrsalijko. His volley is rather weak and looked more like a pass inside to Mandzudic. Very neat again.

8'

The referee calls it back for a foul on Mario Mandzukic by Tagliafico in a superb passing movement from Croatia. Possible revenge for an earlier foul by Mandzukic

6'

4'

Excellent save from Cabellero. Ivan Perisic found some room down the flanks and unleashed a fierce drive. The reserve Chelsea keeper tips it just wide

1'

GAME ON!

The game between Argentina and Croatia has kicked off.

0'

Its twenty years since both sides met in a world cup encounter. Then, a Mauricido Pineda effort separated the teams. It mattered little at the time. Both teams had already qualified from their group. Argentina going on to lose to Holland in the quarters, while Croatia ended finishing third overall. Argentina had a much better side then however. Less reliant on one player.

0'

Curiously, Messi seems to be in some amount of mental anguish during the playing of the national anthems. Expect this to spread like wildfire through social media.
